Whenever you’re planning a trip, a question always come up, “Should I get travel insurance?”

There are reasons why people wouldn’t get insurance like:

  • It’s an additional cost for the trip.
  • You feel like you won’t actually need to use it (and you hope you don’t have to).

But what happens if you do need to use it?

Travel insurance may feel like a “just in case” expense but it is worth it if an issue occurs around or during your trip.

What if your rental car gets damaged in an accident or stolen while you’re on your trip? What if someone has a medical emergency before or during the trip? What if a family member is put in a hospital or, God forbid, worse right before your trip?

There are certain insurance plans the cover these reasons. Other things travel insurance covers: delays or cancellations due to severe weather like hurricanes or technical issues.

Hurricane Season

Hurricane season is between June and November with those first few months being heavy travel times due to kids being out of school for the summer.

Most often hurricanes form in the Atlantic and go through the east coast of the United States, the Caribbean, as well as the Gulf of Mexico. For most Americans, these are places that are more affordable and easier to access. You’ll see more cruise and resort bookings during this time to these areas despite the possibility of a hurricane.

It can affect your trip destination, but it could also affect your trip back home after vacation. When a destination is in the path of a hurricane, flights in or out of that place are delayed or cancelled until it is safe. This would cause you to stay longer than you intended, which means more money. With travel insurance, this additional expense would be covered in a claim.

Technical Issues

We live in a highly technological society where we even have smart phones, cars, and even refrigerators. Of course, airlines, hotels, and other travel related businesses rely on technology.

With the recent CrowdStrike outage that various travel businesses rely on for their communications and other technologies, it has caused cancellations and travel disruptions around the world.

This is something out of your, you travel advisor, and the businesses control until it’s resolved by the hardworking IT engineers.

Travel insurance claims would cover additional expenses for flight delays or trip interruptions caused by the outage.

While hurricane season happens at a certain time every year, something like this is completely unexpected and can happen at any time.

What if you were flying in for a cruise and missed embarkation day because of this outage? Now, you’ve potentially missed out on your entire vacation.

This is why that “just in case” expense would be extremely important.

Yes, this is the Overthinker Guide blog where overthinking is in our nature but in cases like this, overthinking (or being cautious) is helpful.

So, next time you ask yourself, “Should I get travel insurance?” Also ask, “Am I willing to lose out on the amount of money I’ve put into this trip if something goes wrong?”
