My mom’s birthday passed recently and her cousin wanted to treat her (and me) to dinner. My mom landed on Caper’s, a blacked owned restaurant that she’s gone to on a few special occasions. I’d never been before so this got me excited. I love trying new restaurants!
Parking
Caper’s is located in Kennesaw, Georgia off of Barret Parkway. It’s in the same plaza as Publix so there is plenty of free parking. You can enter the parking lot in the front of the plaza or on the side in the back right corner. I met my mom and second cousin at the restaurant.
The Restaurant
Walking in during the evening as the sun set, the restaurant had low lighting, candlelight illuminating the tables in a soft, yellow glow. If this where a date with a significant other this could definitely be considered romantic.
My mom was already inside and seated by the time I arrived. I’d met our cousin in the parking lot so we walked in together. Scott, our server, introduced himself and he was very friendly and helpful with the menus.
Time to Eat
Caper’s has their general menu but the chef creates specials each day, something he likes to do.
The specials were tempting. However, I ordered the citrus glazed pork chop with mashed sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts with bacon hollandaise.
Our cousin ordered the fire roasted stuffed mushroom as an appetizer. The mushrooms were stuffed with jerk-marinaded lump crab. They came in three but they were huge. We each could’ve had one but my mom isn’t fan of mushrooms and is allergic to seafood. Our cousin let me try one and we split the last one. It was really good with mild spice (and that’s coming from me, someone who has GERD).
Not long after the appetizer, our food was served. My pork chop was very flavorful with every bite; the citrus compliments the pork chops well. I loved the mashed sweet potatoes and the Brussels sprouts were delicious and cooked perfectly.
Mom ordered what she always orders: the lamb chops (and a lemon drop to drink). She loves the lamb chops. She ordered broccoli and wasabi mashed potatoes as her sides. I thought the wasabi would give the potatoes a major kick but she said she didn’t feel any spice or heat when she ate them, only that they tasted good.
The lemon drop cocktail came in its own canister for her so she could refill her glass when she got low.
Our cousin ordered catfish, broccoli, and fries for her entrée. She didn’t realize how many fries came in the meal so she asked for some to be taken off and Scott obliged.
Quick Bathroom Break
When I was about full, I went to use the restroom. It was small with three stalls but fairly clean. The low lighting matched the ambiance of the restaurant.
Dessert!
Okay, back to the food. The portion sizes were good. I even had to order a to-go box. I wanted to try one of their desserts so I ordered the toasted strawberry pound cake to-go as well.
It was delicious but I do think it probably would’ve been better to eat it at the restaurant.
When eating my left off the pork chop, I realized that the closer to the bone it got the more pink it was. That would’ve been my only negative experience.
Overall, I’d give Caper’s 9/10. My mom and I are going here again for Mother’s Day with my grandmother (at my grandmother’s request).
Caper’s has a Sunday Brunch menu so I’m excited to see how the vibe is different during the day. I’m also excited to see the chef’s special menu for mother’s day brunch.
