For Galentine’s Day my sisters and I decided to go to Gritz Brunch Bar for, you guessed it, brunch. In 2021, we brunched often, whether that was with each other, the whole family, or with friends. We’d paused on brunching but we’d still try to take time to hang out with each other a few times a year. This Galentine’s brunch was our first official get together for the year since I was on vacation during my little sister’s and my birthday.
We wanted to eat somewhere close by and black-owned if possible. There were a few other options we could choose from like Blu Rose Art Bistro and Gumbeaux’s Cajun Cafe. Ultimately, Gritz hours and menu won us over.
There is street parking next to the building but there’s also a free parking deck offer by the city of Douglasville not far from the restaurant. More cities should offer free parking, I’m just saying.
When we walked in, it was packed. The DJ was bumping music so loud you could feel the bass in the floor.
The space wasn’t large enough to hold a lot of tables based on the amount of people there. Our wait was about 45 minutes. I wanted to see if we could do something in the downtown Douglasville area while we waited but we didn’t want to risk being the table being ready early. We looked at the menus and listened to the music while waited.
The Meal
When we were seated it took a few minutes for the waiter to come. They were still busy so it was understandable.
I ordered the Peach Cobbler French Toast, the menu item that one me over. It’s not on the printed menu but it is on their website. Because it didn’t feel right not trying their name sake, I ordered a side of grits and the pineapple mango lemonade to drink. The drink was extremely sweet but thirst quenching.Â
After ordering, it took another 30 minutes for the food to arrive.
I tried the grits first. They were creamy but they were missing cheese. If you eat here, make sure to order cheese grits.
French toast was good but not sure it was worth the wait. I think I expected fresh peaches. They tasted like they came from the can with thick syrup.
My sister, Cashyia, said her food wasn’t seasoned well. She also ordered the Peach Cobbler French Toast and added fried salmon and mac and cheese. She let us try the Mac and cheese which, I hate to say it, wasn’t good. It was just as she said, bland.
My little sister, Carla, got the turkey burger which she said was okay.
We were tab bit let down by our meals but I still want to go back and give them a second chance. The atmosphere was lively and just that alone can be a good time.
What are some of you favorite places to brunch? If you’ve visited Gritz Brunch Bar, what do you suggest I order next time?
